As the New South Wales Speedway Kart Club prepares for the opening of their 2012 season, their newly elected sponsor and marketing coordinator, Scott Donaldson, has spent the off season negotiating sponsorship support for the club.

Whilst Scott is continuing to negotiate with a number of businesses he has been successful in securing support for our race classes and a number of our race rounds.

Hopping’s Mowers at Rydalmere returns this year as the class sponsor for the KT Modified Light Class as they have done for the past 8 years. Owner and speedway legend, Sid Hopping, has been a great supporter of the club and is again happy to be part of the future of speedway.

Pa-Formance Motors in 2012 comes on board as a first time sponsor of the NSWSKC with naming rights to the newly named Cadet Class formally the Midget class. The Coghlan Oval Track Racing Team has been the sponsor of the class for many years and use to feature their sponsors on the class trophies to offer them further exposure, however, this year Pa-Formance Motors will be the naming sponsor of the class.

Club member and principle of Pa-Formance Motors, Greg Coghlan, builds motors for a number of the front running drivers in the club and has had great success since forming the business. If anyone is looking for a strong reliable motor make contact with Greg and I am sure he will look after you.

On Track Automotive owners Kaye and Les Green have been supporters of the NSWSKC for over 6 years. In that time their primary support has been given to the battlers or the unlucky drivers at each championship round. Again this year Kaye and Les will be supporting the club with the “Hard Luck“ award for 2012. This yearly award is greatly received by someone who has had a bit of bad luck or just had a bad day.

Parramatta Kart Warehouse has supported the NSWSKC over the 12 years they have been in business. This year PKW are returning to servicing the speedway kart industry at every meeting in 2012. A percentage of all track sales will be returned by Parramatta Kart Warehouse to the club to go into the end of year drivers point fund.

Father and Son become Champions Together

After having a strong NSW State Championship meeting back in July, as well as consistent Club championship rounds with the New South Wales Speedway Kart Club, the Baines Racing Team of 14year old Jake and father Wayne went into last weekend’s Australian Title meeting quietly confident of doing well at the event.

The result could not have gone any better for the pair as Jake became the 2011 Junior National Australian Champion and Wayne followed this up by becoming the 2011 Australian KT Heavy Champion, a title which he successfully defended.

This was a two-day meeting across the weekend and on Saturday the qualifying heats were important to both drivers as they tried to gain as many points as possible in their endeavours’ to attain the best possible starting position in the feature race

Heat 1 for Jake was a pole starting position and he went on to make the most of this advantage, led all 12 laps and picked up maximum points to get his title chase under way.

Wayne, on the other hand, had the worst possible start to his title defense by recording a DNF for heat 1, putting him right behind to eight ball.

In heat 2 Jake would start from position 11 on the grid and, after a race-long battle with Ayden Elliott, he would drive his way to a 6^th place finish.

Heat 2 had Wayne gridded 6^th and after some very spirited driving he would drive his way through the field to record a 3^rd place finish.

The 3^rd and last heat on Saturday was scheduled to see the highest points scorers start at the front of the field.

When the grids were posted Jake found himself coming from grid spot 2 making him 2^nd highest on points behind Jordyn Brazier. At the drop of the green flag, Jordyn went to the lead and Jake fell into 2^nd place and, after 12 laps, that’s how they would finish.

Heat 3 saw Wayne gridded in 6^th position again, his DNF in the 1^st heat really hurting him as he was now placed 6^th on points. As he did in heat 2, Wayne would again find his way to a 3^rd place finish behind Donald Stevens and Cameron Coghlan.

The overnight points tally saw Jake in 2^nd position and Wayne had worked his way up to 4^th after the bad start to the day.

Sunday was a glorious day weather-wise and the track was in perfect condition for such a prestigious event.

The drivers only had one heat to get points to take them to the front of the field for the final.

As Jake was 2^nd on points, he had to start from grid position 10. On the first lap he was caught up trying to miss an accident that saw him drop to the tail of the field, meanwhile points leader Brazier was also caught up in an incident, which saw him taken out of the race. Jake recovered and went on to record a 7^th place finish and that would be enough to see him start pole in the Australian Title feature race.

The fourth heat for Wayne again had him coming out of position 6 and, again, he could only manage to make his way to 3^rd place. This would see him 3^rd on points and starting the feature from position 3.

Feature Time.

Jake was first on track and he was in the best possible position - pole. In the pits, Wayne and Jake spoke about how important it was to get the start and hold low in the first turn and coming off turn 2. Jake did just as discussed and was never headed from that point on. During the race Jake was able to complete 20 perfect laps to go on and record his first Australian Title. After receiving the checkered flag and doing his victory lap, he was meet on the in- grid by his very proud parents.

Now it was Wayne’s turn - Could he defend his title from position 3? Could he make it a father and son double? The answer to both questions was yes. Just as Jake had done, Wayne was able to take the lead on the first lap of the race and then went on to lead all 20 laps making it a Baines Team Double.

Later at the presentation, both Jake and Wayne thanked Parramatta Kart Warehouse, Hopping’s Mowers, Benson Racing Karts, Rams Race Engines, Stillshots, Showpiece Signs and DTO Raceware for their ongoing support.

The next time the boys hit the track they will both proudly display their green plates signifying they are the Australian Champions.

As part of the year long fund raising Jake and Wayne Baines are doing for Breast Cancer Research, the team was invited down to the offices of the McGrath Foundation where Jake was lucky enough to meet one of his cricketing heroes Glenn McGrath.

The meeting had been scheduled for about 2 months however was kept secret from Jake.

Thinking that it was a meeting to update how the fund raising has been going, the team meet with co-ordinator Christy Kinder and were in the board room when thru the door came Glenn and he sat down beside Jake.

Jake was in total awe and was very surprised that one of his all time favourite players was sitting next to him.

For the next half an hour Glen gave his time to Jake and together they discussed his racing, his cricket and his football before going and having some photos together with a reporter from the Blacktown Advocate who will be doing a story on Jake.

Jake Presented Glenn with an artwork designed by NSWSKC Club sponsor Stillshot's Gavin Skeene and it was well received by Glenn and was put up in the office at Northbridge.

Glenn then signed a copy for Jake to keep and also presented Jake with a McGrath Foundation bat also signed for the occasion.

On behalf of the New South Wales Speedway Kart Club as president Wayne offered Glenn and his children the opportunity to come out to the Nepean Venue to experience speedway karting and the offer was well received and Glenn's team are currently checking his calendar to see if it can be fitted in to his already busy schedule.

The day was a complete success The Baines Motorsport Team would like to thank Christy for organising the day and also Glenn for giving up his time for Jake.

Well Done Amy and Mick

Now that Amy's season has come to an end I would like to congratulate her on the effort she put in to her racing. I was at her first meeting at PCR and to see her that night very carefully drive around, to the demon we saw at Nowra going high around cars for positions the improvement has been unbelievable in such a small period of time. To Rod (her Dad) well-done mate you must be very proud of your girl, your advice and guidance has certainly paid off.

On behalf of the club I would like to thank Amy and the Shute Family for the way they have promoted the NSWSKC while they have been racing around the state.
Amy has been a model representative for her family and the club. We all hope you had fun and enjoyed your time in the car and look forward to seeing those improved skills out at Nepean. It will be interesting to see who wins the ride this year. Once again thank you Amy.

I would also like to congratulate Michael Jordan on his speedcar debut last Saturday night at TSS.

Michael was the winner of the 2010 Speedcar Top Gun Challenge and last Saturday night saw him receive his prize driving the Malouf Family speedcar in a race meeting at TSS.

Michael did an extremely good job and by feature time was really starting to get a hold of the car.

It was a very generous offer from the Malouf’s and on behalf of the club I would like to thank them for the use of the car, and also extend a thank you to the speedcar club of NSW for coming up with the concept.

NSW Speedcar Club Recognises and Rewards Young Talent

This Saturday night at Tyrepower Sydney Speedway, the time honoured NSW Speedcar Club, in conjunction with the NSW Speedway Kart Club, will reward one young driver from the Kart Club with his first taste of speedcar racing.

Last year, the Speedcar Club approached the Kart Club with a programme called

“The Speedcar Top Gun Challenge” which would identify talented drivers and give one of them an opportunity to experience the thrill of racing a speedcar.

The programme set out criteria for young drivers to meet throughout their racing season and took in many facets of the sport including how the driver presented himself and his race team both on and off the track, how the driver promoted himself throughout the year and also his driving ability.

All these assets were important to the Speedcar Club as part of promoting the complete package and rewarding the winner for his or her efforts.

The popular 2010 winner was announced at the Kart Club’s gala end-of-season presentation night in front of 300 people by Speedcar Club representatives, Anthony and Ken Brien.

The fantastic opportunity was awarded to 18year old Michael Jordan and it topped off what was a great year for him. As well as winning the Speedcar Top Gun Challenge, Michael won the award for the 2010 Most Improved Senior Driver, was the 2010 Clubman Light Champion, placed 3^rd in the 2010 Overall Club Championship and was a member of the winning Premier League Team, the Benson Bandits.

Such has been the success of the programme, the Speedcar Club last week announced that they will again run it throughout the 2011 kart season to indentify another driver who will be given the chance to experience this wonderful and generous offer put together by members of their Club.

The members of the New South Wales Speedway Kart Club would like to acknowledge and thank all the members from the Speedcar Club who have been involved in making this award possible. To have such an honourable club as the Speedcar Club involved with the future talent of the sport is invaluable.

It was a quite weekend for NSWSKC club members racing on the weekend however we would like to congratulate Mark Brown on his win at the Blue Ribbon Raceway in Horsham Vic on Saturday night.

Reports say Mark was dominate in his Team Fox Racing speedcar and this meeting now sets the them up very well what is going to be a very busy next month for the team.

At Tyrepower Sydney Speedway on Saturday night, Dean Smith (Katelyn and Brittany Hickey’s Dad) was competing in the Late Model 50 Lap Grand National race.

After qualifying the number 90 car 10^th for the event, early in the race he had moved his way into the top 10 and was looking strong for a solid result until mechanical gremlins saw him have to retire the car.

We would like to wish speedcar drivers Tim Evens and Mark Brown the best of luck this weekend as they compete in the NSW Speedcar Title

It was another good weekend of results for current and former NSWSKC members at race meetings across the state.

Dubbo: Fri/Sat 11^th and 12^th

Wingless : Joel Rhind and Kyle Pollock continued their great formed from over the last month and both had very solid runs in there 3 heats on Friday night.

On Saturday in the feature Kyle was in a contenting position and looking strong before a mechanical mishap saw him expire from the race.

However Joel after being very strong all weekend started from last position on the grid in the feature and forged forward to finish in second place.

Parramatta Sat 12^th

Sprintcars : Former members of the club Ian Madsen and Kelly Linigen both found their way to the podium after a marathon feature race and finished 1^st and 2^nd respectively.

Another former member Mitchell Dumesny was closing in fast for a podium finish as well however on lap 28 he rode Kelly’s wheel and flipped destroying the number 77.

Lighting Sprints : Andrew “Scarey” Johnson finally broke his string of bad luck and claimed victory in the feature race after spending most of the race in 5^th place. Andrew came home strong in the later half of the race and took a well deserved and calculated win.

Junior Sedan : Amy Shute continues to learn and impress in the clubs junior sedan each week she takes the car for a skid . After the last couple of meetings which haven’t gone her way , Amy drove well all night and was just off the leaders pace . Whilst not on the podium Amy finished with the car straight and a smile on her face.

Mixed weekend in speedway for NSWSKC members

Saturday the 26^th of Feb around different speedway tracks, a number of New South Wales Speedway Kart Club members were out racing in various divisions with mixed results.

Nowra Speedway:

410 Sprintcars: Current and long time member Rod Bright finished 2^nd in the feature race and in doing so secured the 2011 Sprintcar Country Series.

Rod has raced both speedcars and sprintcars and this year has followed the sprintcar series across regional NSW and has reaped the rewards being crowned Champion on Saturday night.

New club member Steve Caunt was having a solid night until a 3 car accident in the feature race saw his car damaged and unfortunately he had to retire from the event.

Junior Sedan: The NSWSKC owns a junior sedan, which is offered as a prize to junior drivers each year to help give them a start in speedway. This year Amy Shute is having a successful year learning at each event she attends. On Saturday night however a broken driveline in the first heat put paid to Amy’s night.

Sydney Speedway:

Wingless Sprintcars: It was a great result night for NSWSKC members in this growing division. There are a lot of current and former members racing in this class. On Saturday nightclub members Joel Rhind and Kyle Pollock ran 1^st and 2nd in the feature race respectively and Life member Brian Briton for a bulk of the race was in 3^rd place until surrendering that position late in the race.
